Artworks infested by insects often face a grim future, especially since pest damage is typically excluded from even the most comprehensive specialist insurance policies. I visited the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol last week and was once again stunned by the quality of the exhibitions and the sheer energy and creativity of the place. As the only Royal Academy outside London it operates very much in the same way as its London counterpart and is indeed housed in a similarly impressive building in the heart of the city. But, how many people outside the South West actually go and see their wonderful shows?

I very much recommend their current crop. They have a stunning retrospective of the work of Paule Vezelay who is someone who deserves to be known better not only for the time that she was in Paris working with her  partner  André Masson producing dreamlike Surrealist work but also for her extraordinary abstracts of war damage, her later plant drawings and her wonderfully graphic designs for Heals.
Running concurrently, is their Biennial Open 2025: Paper Works, and this too was a revelation. Chosen by the RWA’s academicians and with invited artist Ian McKeever, the variety and quality of the work was enormously high and what is more, very well priced.  They also have a very nice caff with stunning Albert Irwins on the wall! Well worth a visit.

Applications Now Open

The Hallett Independent Acquisitions Award is a purchase grant to enable a museum or gallery to acquire an original print or prints for their collection.

The Award aims not only to enhance art collections across the country, but also to build relationships between museum curators and the art market.

Applications are invited from museums, public galleries and print collections across the UK.

The 2025 Award

  • The winning applicant will receive a sum of £8,000 to spend at the London Original Print Fair, 20 – 23 March 2025, on a print or prints.
  • A shortlist of 4 institutions will be selected and notified by the last week in February. A representative from each of these institutions will be invited to the opening of LOPF on Wednesday 19 March. LOPF will cover the costs of a night in a central London hotel for the evening of Wednesday 19 March 2025 for the 4 curators from shortlisted institutions. The winner of the Award will be announced at the start of the opening reception.
  • The winning applicant will agree to send a representative to the opening reception of the London Original Print Fair at Somerset House on Wednesday 19 March 2025, with authority to make the acquisition on behalf of the institution before the Fair closes at 6pm on Sunday, 23 March 2025.
  • The winning applicant will notify LOPF of their acquisition by the close of the Fair at 6pm on Sunday, 23 March 2025. The museum and acquisition will be publicised in press releases, on the LOPF and Hallett Independent Insurance websites and other promotional materials.
  • The winning applicant will credit The Hallett Independent Acquisitions Award as the source of funding for the acquisition, wherever it is mentioned or exhibited.

    Museums and galleries are invited to apply by filling in the application form by 5pm, Monday 10 February 2025.

    On your application, please outline the following:

    • The role that prints already play in the collection
    • How or why you would like to expand your print holdings
    • What difference this would make to the organisation
    • What print acquisitions you are looking for and why, mentioning any specific project if appropriate, for example inclusion in a forthcoming exhibition
    • Any information you can give about previous experience at the print fair or any dealings with specific exhibitors will be of interest

BT Redcare, a provider of alarm transmission has announced it will cease operation as of August 2025. If you are a customer, you should have received a written notice from them by post or email advising you of the planned closure.

Important Next Steps (if you have an alarm with Redcare signalling)

1. It is essential that you immediately speak to your security and fire protection system provider to see what the alternatives to Redcare are.  Do not delay doing this as there may be supply and demand issues due to so many systems having to be replaced or upgraded.

2. Once you have been provided with details for an alternative system(s), we strongly recommend you provide us (or your insurance broker) with the details before you agree to any alternative, so we can check with your insurer that the suggested system is comparable and acceptable.  We are aware that some alternatives being suggested are not comparable to the Redcare signalling, which has been considered the gold standard of signalling for many years.

3. Insurance approved and certified alarm transmission systems are categorised as either single path (SP) or dual path (DP) and will also be attributed a category, typically 1-4 for dual path systems, with systems noted as SP3, DP2 etc. A comparable to a Redcare GSM system would need to reflect a dual path transmission system meeting a minimum of category 3 (DP3).

On the 1st February 2024, BT announced that it is withdrawing its Redcare alarm signalling facility and operations will cease completely from the 1st August 2025. This means that fire and security alarms using this type of remote signalling will need to upgraded to a new remote signalling system.

How This Can Affect Your Insurance Policy

Your insurers will have agreed your policy cover based on the information disclosed to them at the time of inception and on the basis of you having an alarm with remote signalling which is maintained under a contract.  If changes are to be made to your alarm system, you must inform your insurance company of those changes so they can agree them and approve the new system.

What You Need To Do

If you are an existing Redcare client, it is imperative that you contact your alarm system provider to ensure that an alternative and appropriate replacement can be installed before the 1st August 2025 and that remote signalling will continue uninterrupted. Alarm providers are expecting a surge in demand and installation capacity may be in short supply, so do not delay.

The replacement to consider should comply to the latest “DP3” (dual path) Grade as being the most appropriate.

Please contact us if you have any questions about your current insurance obligations and/or the alternative system suggested by your alarm company and we will check it with your insurers.

*Your alarm installer must have an NSI or SSAIB accreditation in order for your alarm to qualify for a policy response.

What Happens If You Do Nothing

If you do not arrange for your alarm signalling to continue uninterrupted and your cover is based on remote signalling being in place, you are not meeting your policy conditions and are jeopardising any claim for theft or fire, as insurers are within their rights to reject such a claim.
